Kandi Burruss filed for divorce from husband Todd Tucker on Friday, according to her exclusive statement to PEOPLE.
The Real Housewives of Atlanta star opened up about the split during an Amazon Live session on Monday. She said it’s been a “pretty crazy time” since filing the papers.
“I’m going to be very honest with you. I am up and down,” Burruss told viewers.
The Grammy-winning songwriter explained that divorce isn’t easy. She said some days she feels fine, but other times sadness hits her.
Burruss, 49, left RHOA after 14 seasons last year.
During her reality TV days, she couldn’t keep private moments away from cameras. “In real life, in my everyday life, I really don’t like those moments to be shared with the world,” she said.
But she made an exception for her Amazon audience.
“To be clear, I filed Friday, but this is something that has been brewing for a while,” Burruss explained.
She said her smiling social media posts didn’t tell the whole story. “All the times you’ve been seeing me online [all smiles] means nothing. I’ve been going through it. Life has been life-ing me.”
The online reaction to her divorce news has been tough to handle.
“Everyone’s making their own narrative of what’s going on,” she said. Sometimes she wants to respond to comments but holds back.
“I’m all over the place. Sometimes things just don’t work out. It just is what it is.”
Burruss and Tucker, 52, share two children together.
Their son Ace is 9 years old. Their daughter Blaze just turned 6 on Saturday.
“I have no regrets,” Burruss said about their relationship.
The former couple will spend Thanksgiving together despite their split. They also celebrated Blaze’s birthday as a family just days after filing divorce papers.
“We are parents together. We are co-parenting together. We have beautiful children together, so we are trying to make this transition as smooth as it could possibly be for our kids.”
She emphasized that keeping things friendly is their main concern.
In her statement to PEOPLE, Burruss focused on moving forward. “This is a difficult and emotional time, but my focus remains on protecting my peace, being the best mother I can be, and co-parenting with love and respect.”
“I’m stepping into a new chapter pouring into my work, my family, and my own growth,” she continued.
She asked fans for privacy during this transition.
The couple met while filming season four of The Real Housewives of Atlanta in 2011.
They announced their engagement in January 2013. Tucker and Burruss married in April 2014.
