A source close to Dakota Johnson tells PEOPLE that the actress is "doing well" nearly three weeks after her breakup with Chris Martin was confirmed.
The split ended the pair’s nearly eight-year on-and-off relationship.
“Dakota’s doing well. The split wasn’t exactly a shock,” says the Johnson source, adding that the actress, 35, and Coldplay singer Martin, 48, “had the same issues for a while.”
Multiple sources confirmed to PEOPLE on June 4 that Johnson and Martin had broken up. The pair were first romantically linked in 2017 and photographed together as recently as May 16, when they stepped out together in Malibu, California.
Johnson wants to focus on living intentionally. The source explains her mindset following the breakup.
“She wants to live her life very intentionally - she doesn’t want to have any regrets. She loves all her creative projects and is excited about her career. She believes there is more to life than work though. She wants a meaningful life on all levels.”
The breakup came roughly three months after an insider told PEOPLE that the pair had actually been engaged for "years" after they initially sparked engagement rumors in 2020. However, they were "in no rush to get married" at that time.
When breakup rumors surfaced in August 2024, a rep for Johnson shut them down and said she and Martin remained "happily together."
Around the same time, one insider told PEOPLE they had worked through their issues.
“They’ve had issues and taken breaks in the past, but things are great now. They both love their careers. They are balancing things the best they can.”
Martin was recently photographed stepping out with his son Moses, 19, in New York City on June 16. The singer and songwriter shares Moses and daughter Apple, 21, with ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow.
Johnson previously opened up about her relationship with Moses and Apple during a March 2024 interview with Bustle.
“I love those kids like my life depends on it. With all my heart.”
She also told the outlet she was a big fan of watching Martin perform.
“I could watch him every day. I don’t know how to explain it. … I’m watching my most favorite being do his most favorite thing.”

Johnson is now starring in Materialists, which was released in theaters on June 13. Her next film, Splitsville, premieres Aug. 22.
