Win Butler and Régine Chassagne from Arcade Fire announced their separation after 22 years of marriage, according to a statement posted on the Grammy-winning band’s Instagram page Thursday.
The couple married in 2003 and have one son together, born in 2013.
“They continue to love, admit and support each other as they co-parent their son,” the statement read.
The band indicated they’ll continue making music together despite the personal split.
“Their work in Haiti with KANPE continues and their bond as creative soulmates will endure, as will Arcade Fire,” the statement continued. “The band send their love and look forward to seeing you all on tour soon.”
Butler is 45 and Chassagne is 49.
The separation comes more than two years after Butler faced sexual misconduct allegations. In August 2022, multiple women accused Butler of sexual harassment in a report published by Pitchfork.
Butler admitted to having affairs but denied any wrongdoing.
Chassagne issued a statement supporting Butler at the time of the allegations.
“While these relationships were all consensual, I am very sorry to anyone who I have hurt with my behavior,” Butler said in a statement to Pitchfork in 2022. “As I look to the future, I am continuing to learn from my mistakes and working hard to become a better person, someone my son can be proud of.”
He added: “I’m sorry I wasn’t more aware and tuned in to the effect I have on people – I f—– up, and while not an excuse, I will continue to look forward and heal what can be healed, and learn from past experiences.”
Butler called Chassagne his “soulmate” in 2022 and said he was “lucky and grateful to have her by my side.”
He described how she “waited patiently watching me suffer and tried to help me as best as she could. I know it must have been so hard for her to watch the person she loved so lost.”
In her own statement to Pitchfork, Chassagne also called Butler her “soulmate.”
“I know he is a good man who cares about this world, our band, his fans, friends, and our family,” she said in 2022.
“I know what is in his heart, and I know he has never, and would never, touch a woman without her consent and I am certain he never did,” Chassagne said. “He has lost his way and he has found his way back. I love him and love the life we have created together.”
Arcade Fire’s current lineup includes Butler, Chassagne, Richard Reed Parry, Tim Kingsbury and Jeremy Gara.
The band’s most recent album, Pink Elephant, was released in May. Their 2011 album The Suburbs won the Grammy for Album of the Year.
