Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas are staying just friends, according to a source close to the actress.
The pair never publicly confirmed they were dating despite being photographed together multiple times since February. A source tells PEOPLE that de Armas is single “and has been for a while.”
“She stays in touch with Tom and they still have an upcoming movie project that she’s looking forward to,” the source adds.
The Mission: Impossible star, 63, and the Ballerina actress, 37, were first spotted spending time together in February. They continued appearing together over the summer, including a Vermont getaway in July where photographers captured them holding hands.
The source describes Cruise as a “dear friend and mentor” to de Armas. She “very much enjoys spending time with him,” according to the insider.
Representatives for both actors didn’t respond to requests for comment.
In July, when de Armas showed Cruise around Vermont, an insider told PEOPLE that she “really enjoys spending time with him.”
“They’ve become incredibly close, and Tom continues to be a huge support, both personally and professionally.”
De Armas addressed their frequent public appearances in May during an interview with Women’s Wear Daily.
“Obviously, everyone knows I’m working with Tom Cruise,” she said, teasing an action project with director-producers Doug Liman and Christopher McQuarrie.
The actress described the intense preparation required for working with Cruise.
“And, of course, I’m doing crazy training, as you do when you’re working with Tom. It’s another level that just keeps setting the bar higher and higher. But it’s so much fun.”
That same month, Cruise praised de Armas’ abilities at his Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning premiere.
She’s a “very, very talented, great dramatic actress, comedic, tremendous ability, learns quickly,” Cruise told Extra. He described her to Access Hollywood as having “incredible” ability.
“Her ability is incredible. There’s an actress that has dramatic chops, someone who’s comedic, very, very talented. … Just a great actress.”
De Armas spoke about Cruise’s support during her From the World of John Wick: Ballerina premiere in June.
“It is very special that someone like him is supporting [Ballerina],” she told Variety. “It is really special in general to have other actors and people supporting each other. We can do well all together.”
The pair continue working together on their upcoming action project while maintaining their friendship.
