Shania Twain Refused to Perform You’re Still the One After Her Divorce

Shania Twain revealed in a recent interview that her fans have given her a “newfound appreciation” for her Grammy-winning hit “You’re Still the One.” The country star spoke with ETalk in a TikTok video originally shared on YouTube on Aug. 11 about her complicated relationship with the 1997 song.

The 60-year-old singer wrote the track with her ex-husband, music producer Robert “Mutt” Lange.

“Well, I’m not just saying this because it seems obvious, but ‘You’re Still the One’ really is one of my favorites to do live,” Twain said.

But it wasn’t always that way.

“I’ve gone through quite a few stages with that song of, not really even wanting to sing it live for a while, just thinking, ‘Well, okay, I’m divorced now, does it really mean what it used to mean when I wrote it?'”

Twain’s perspective changed because of how much the song means to her audience. She said fans have helped her rediscover why the track matters.

“It’s mostly fans, fans love it, they want to hear it. It means so much to them in so many ways. They’re either getting married to it, or have been married to it, or had an anniversary, or a friendship, or whatever it is.”

The connection goes beyond her personal experience with the song.

“It’s more the meaning that it is, or that it represents, to everybody else that makes it so meaningful to me again,” Twain added.

New Album in the Works

The Queen of Country Pop also shared news about her upcoming seventh album. She’s currently “in the middle of making” the new record.

“It’s going to be different than maybe what anyone is expecting. There’s a lot of storytelling in this album,” she said.

Chart Success and Awards

“You’re Still the One” earned major recognition in 1999. The song won two Grammy Awards: Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance. It was also nominated for Song of the Year and Record of the Year.

The track spent 42 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It hit No. 1 on May 2, 1998, and stayed there for two weeks.

Twain and Lange, 76, were married from 1993 until 2008. They share 24-year-old son Eja.

She’s now married to Frédéric Thiébaud. The couple tied the knot on New Year’s Day in 2011.

Breaking Out of Boxes

Twain spoke to PEOPLE in February about resisting limits in the music industry. She discussed pressure from both fans and executives to stay within certain boundaries.

“If I feel like I’m being put in a box, I start to panic. I run in any direction I can because I don’t want to be contained. I have to be able to find my own way.”

She values creative freedom above predictability.

“Sometimes I’m not even sure where I’m going myself. How can somebody else tell me that, right? So I need the freedom to explore and to land wherever that exploration takes me.”

Twain supports other artists who push beyond genre expectations. She believes musicians should follow their instincts rather than industry pressure.

“I’m always championing anybody that does things that are unexpected by the industry, or unexpected by the audience.”

“They may not have seen it coming, but the artist does have a sense of where they want to go exploring, and I really think it’s wonderful that they do, that they explore it, and they take it to whatever limit interests them.”
