Russell Brand criticized his ex-wife Katy Perry’s new relationship with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during a Thursday appearance at a Turning Point USA event in Phoenix.
The English comedian, 50, addressed Perry’s romantic history while speaking to the crowd.
“Look, Katy Perry, I was married to her. I love her still, and I’m glad that her mom’s in the room to hear me say this, but look. I was okay with Orlando Bloom, but Justin Trudeau? C’mon, man! Don’t put me in a category with that guy! That globalist stooge,” Brand said.
Brand and Perry were married from 2010 to 2012. Brand filed for divorce, and Perry’s emotional reaction to receiving the news shortly before going onstage was featured in her documentary Katy Perry: Part of Me.
Perry and actor Orlando Bloom, 48, met at a Golden Globes afterparty in 2016. The couple got engaged in 2019 but called off their engagement in June 2025 after nine years together.
They share daughter Daisy Dove, born in August 2020.
Perry and Trudeau, 53, sparked relationship rumors in July 2025 when they were spotted on a date in Montreal. A source told PEOPLE at the time that the pair had an “instant connection.”
“They are interested in each other, but it will take a while to see where this goes,” the source said. “She is traveling around the world, and he is figuring out his life now that he is no longer prime minister of Canada, but there is an attraction. They have a lot in common.”
Brand faces legal issues related to sexual assault allegations from multiple women.
Earlier this year, he was charged with five counts of assault and rape stemming from allegations from four women. The accusations first surfaced in September 2023 through a joint investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches.
One woman alleged Brand raped her in southern England in 1999. Other alleged incidents occurred in London in 2001 and between 2004 and 2005.
Brand has denied all accusations, saying he “absolutely refutes” the claims.
Perry and Trudeau made their public debut as a couple in October 2025 at a cabaret show at Crazy Horse Paris to celebrate her birthday.
“Music is one of many things they can share,” an insider said. “Both are idealists and still live in a world where they think they can make improvements, although it has gotten more difficult.”
