Nicole Kidman appeared to hint at her separation from Keith Urban weeks before the news became public, according to a Vogue interview conducted in late August.
The Oscar winner, who split from Urban in early summer, sat down with the magazine weeks before PEOPLE confirmed the couple had gone their separate ways after 19 years of marriage.
When asked how she felt in her 50s, Kidman, 58, told Vogue:
“How many times do you have to be taught that you think you know where your life is going and then it isn’t going in that direction?”
She didn’t expand on her relationship status during the interview.
The actress did recall spending time with family and friends in July and August while filming Practical Magic 2 in London. “Going to Hyde Park and concerts, Glastonbury and Salisbury – so much summer fun – Evita, seeing theater, walking Hampstead Heath, swimming there,” Kidman told Vogue.
“Went to Portugal, went to Greece, had my nieces and nephews around, lots of family: my sister, my best friend since I was 4, and her three children. A very tight group.”
The Split Goes Public
News broke September 29 that Kidman and the country musician, 57, had separated early in the summer.
Kidman formally filed for divorce in Nashville one day later, citing irreconcilable differences and listing the date of separation as the time of filing.
The couple married in 2006 and welcomed two daughters: Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret, now 17 and 14. Kidman asked to be primary residential parent in the custody agreement as part of the divorce filing.
A source close to the family told PEOPLE last week that the Babygirl star “had been stressed because she knew the separation would eventually become public and she was dreading it.”
“But she’s surprisingly level-headed and calm. Now that it’s out she’s just focused on what’s ahead and her girls.”
Another source told PEOPLE that Kidman “had been fighting to save the marriage” and “didn’t want” the breakup.
“The entire Kidman family has come together to support one another,” the insider added. Her sister Antonia has been a key supporter.
A source close to the family told PEOPLE on October 7 that Kidman has “had a good attitude about everything and life goes on.”
“She was in Texas this weekend and is happy to be back at work.”
Representatives for Kidman and Urban haven’t responded to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.
