Marion Cotillard & Guillaume Canet Split After 18 Years Together

Marion Cotillard and Guillaume Canet have ended their relationship after 18 years together, according to Associated Press reports Friday.

The Dark Knight Rises actress, 49, and the French film director, 52, announced their separation to the Agence France-Presse news agency. They said the statement was meant "to avoid all speculation, rumors and risky interpretations."

The former couple said they were separating by "common accord" and with "mutual goodwill." They didn’t give a reason for the breakup.

PEOPLE couldn’t reach Canet for comment. Representatives for Cotillard didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

Nearly Two Decades Together

Cotillard and Canet first starred opposite each other in 2003’s Love Me If You Dare. They began dating in 2007.

The couple have two children together.

They welcomed their first child, son Marcel, on May 19, 2011. In March 2017, Cotillard’s representatives confirmed to PEOPLE that the couple had a second child – a daughter.

Career Highlights

Cotillard’s role as French singer Édith Piaf in La Vie en Rose earned her an Academy Award in 2008.

Both actors have worked with Leonardo DiCaprio. Cotillard played the Titanic star’s love interest in 2010’s Inception. Canet, who’s also an actor, had a role in 2000’s The Beach.

Cotillard also starred opposite Brad Pitt in the World War II romantic thriller Allied.

Their working relationship on that film sparked rumors of an alleged affair. The rumors came before Pitt’s divorce from Angelina Jolie.

Addressing the Rumors

While pregnant with her second child, The Morning Show actress denied the rumors in a public statement. She shared it on her Instagram account.

“This is going to be my first and only reaction to the whirlwind news that broke 24 hours ago and that I was swept up into. I am not used to commenting on things like this nor taking them seriously but as this situation is spiraling and affecting people I love, I have to speak up.”

“Firstly, many years ago, I met the man of my life, father of our son and of the baby we are expecting. He is my love, my best friend, the only one that I need.”

She was referring to Canet in that statement.

Before concluding and translating the same message in French, she said she wished both Angelina and Brad "peace in this very tumultuous moment."

Canet also denied the rumors at the time. He called out "the venal stupidity of some people calling themselves journalists" and "the haters" who spread the "stupid and unfounded accusations."
