Kevin Federline is sharing details about a heated argument with Britney Spears that he says changed their marriage forever.
In his upcoming memoir You Thought You Knew, Federline claims Spears slapped him during a fight about marijuana while she was holding their young son. The book comes out Oct. 21.
The Alleged Incident
Federline, 47, writes that he was working in his studio when a friend dropped off an ounce of weed. He says this was normal and had never caused problems before.
“It had never been an issue before,” he wrote. “But that day it was like something snapped.”
According to Federline, Spears, 43, became angry and fired their entire security team. This surprised him since he says she knew he smoked marijuana and had even joined him occasionally.
The argument continued in their bedroom. Federline writes that Spears followed him there, yelling while holding their son Sean Preston, now 20. The couple also has another son, Jayden James, 19.
“I wasn’t hiding anything. She knew who I was. She married me knowing it. But she was on the warpath, shouting her head off,” he wrote. “Then she slapped me. Right in the face. With our son in her arms.”
Marriage Breakdown
Federline says the incident marked a turning point in their relationship.
He writes that he started “pulling back” and felt like a stranger in his own home. “Something broke that day,” he wrote, and they “were never the same after.”
The couple was married from 2004 to 2007.
Spears’ Previous Comments
Spears didn’t mention any slapping incident in her 2023 memoir The Woman in Me. But she did write about her dislike of marijuana, which she often smelled in Federline’s studio.
“I couldn’t stand being around pot smoke,” she wrote. “Even the smell of it nauseated me.”
Spears Responds
Spears has criticized Federline’s book in two social media posts this week.
In her first post on Oct. 15, she accused Federline of “constantly gaslighting” her. She defended her relationship with her sons, saying she’s “almost begged” them to be part of her life.
“Trust me, those white lies in that book, they are going straight to the bank and I am the only one who genuinely gets hurt here,” she wrote.
She added that she’ll “always love” her sons and has “had enough” of negative stories about her.
In a second post, Spears slammed Federline for trying to “profit off my pain.”
“If you really love someone then you don’t help them by humiliating them. What scared me was how serious and angry he got, people have no idea, it is way worse than anyone could imagine.”
A representative for Spears told PEOPLE: “Once again he and others are profiting off her and sadly it comes after child support has ended with Kevin. All she cares about are her kids, Sean Preston and Jayden James and their well-being during this sensationalism. She detailed her journey in her memoir.”
