A source close to the couple tells PEOPLE that Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman’s split “hasn’t been a secret” to friends.
The country music star, 57, and the actress, 57, have been “living separately for a while now,” according to the insider.
People in Urban’s circle felt the breakup was “inevitable.”
Urban and Kidman married in June 2006 after meeting at a benefit concert in Nashville in 2005. They share two daughters together – Sunday Rose, 16, and Faith Margaret, 14.
The couple last appeared together publicly at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Governors Awards in November 2024.
Sources say the separation has been an “open secret” among their friends and industry contacts for months.
“They’ve been trying to make it work for the sake of their family, but they’ve grown apart over the years”
Neither Urban nor Kidman’s representatives immediately responded to requests for comment.
The pair had previously weathered challenges in their marriage, including Urban’s struggles with addiction early in their relationship. In 2006, shortly after their wedding, Urban entered rehab for alcohol addiction.
Kidman had been supportive throughout Urban’s recovery journey, often crediting their strong communication for helping them navigate difficult times.
Urban has been touring extensively with his High and Alive tour, while Kidman has been busy with filming commitments for upcoming projects.
The actress recently wrapped production on her latest film and has several projects in development.
Both stars have maintained busy schedules that have kept them apart for extended periods.
Friends say the couple tried marriage counseling but ultimately decided to separate earlier this year.
The insider notes that despite their marital issues, Urban and Kidman remain committed to co-parenting their daughters.
“They’re both devoted parents and that won’t change,” the source explains.
Details about any potential divorce proceedings or custody arrangements haven’t been disclosed.
