Jacob Elordi made his first public appearance since his breakup with Olivia Jade Giannulli, walking the red carpet at the Venice International Film Festival on Saturday for the world premiere of Frankenstein.
The 28-year-old actor was photographed leaving the Excelsior Hotel and heading to the festival by boat. He flashed a peace sign at onlookers before posing on the red carpet in an all-white ensemble with black shoes.
PEOPLE confirmed earlier this month that Elordi and 25-year-old Giannulli had split after dating on and off since 2021.
On-Again, Off-Again Romance
The pair first sparked dating rumors in late 2021 when they were spotted having coffee in Los Angeles. This came one month after Elordi’s split from Kaia Gerber.
Sources gave conflicting reports at the time. One insider said they were “casually dating” while another denied they were together.
They reportedly broke up in August 2022 but reconciled by June 2023. The duo was seen vacationing together in Italy and later spending time on Lake Coeur d’Alene in Idaho with Giannulli’s parents, Lori Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli.
PEOPLE confirmed in July 2023 that Elordi and Giannulli were officially back together. A source said at the time that they were “getting serious.”
The recent split came after months of speculation about their relationship status. Multiple sources told PEOPLE in January 2024 that the couple was still going strong.
Giannulli seemed to hint they were still together in April when she liked an Instagram post from Elordi’s sister Isabella about his project The Narrow Road to the Deep North, according to E! News.
Playing Frankenstein’s Monster
Elordi’s latest project casts him as the monster in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein. Oscar Isaac plays the mad scientist Victor Frankenstein in the film.
The cast also includes Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Charles Dance and Christoph Waltz.
According to Netflix, Isaac’s Dr. Frankenstein is a “brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.”
The role required extensive preparation. Elordi spent 10 hours in the makeup chair daily, according to an August 20 profile in Variety.
“You throw time away when you make a film like this. I stopped having a clock, and I would just wait till the SUV arrived. That meant it was time to go. I didn’t do breakfast, lunch or dinner, or think in terms of morning, afternoon, night. It was just one time.”
Frankenstein hits theaters October 17 and streams on Netflix November 7.
The Venice International Film Festival runs through September 6.
