Bryton James has filed for divorce after less than a year of marriage, according to court documents obtained by TMZ.
The Young and the Restless star filed the paperwork on Monday, Oct. 13, in Los Angeles.
James, 39, cited irreconcilable differences in his divorce filing from wife Jahaira James. The couple wed in March but separated just three months later in June.
The divorce documents show the pair don’t share any children together.
James is requesting the court terminate its ability to award spousal support to either party. He’s also asking that Jahaira restore her previous name.
Emmy-Winning Career
James first gained recognition playing Richie Crawford on Family Matters before landing his current role on The Young and the Restless in 2004.
He’s played billionaire Devon Hamilton for over two decades on the CBS soap opera.
His performance earned him two Daytime Emmy Awards. He won Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series in 2007, then took home Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2020.
James received five additional nominations in the supporting actor category, according to CBS.
Public Romance
The actor had publicly celebrated his relationship with Jahaira, a professional dancer, on social media earlier this year.
Parade reported that James shared photos of Jahaira performing during Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter Tour in May.
“Her journey is what inspiration wants to be when it grows up,” he wrote in a since-deleted post. “And I am beyond proud to be a witness to her art as we share this life together.”
James described how his love for her “continues to exude” in the caption.
Previous Marriage Doubts
This marks James’s second divorce. He was previously married to Ashley Leisinger from 2011 to 2014.
During a 2021 appearance on the State of Mind with Maurice Benard podcast, James had expressed doubts about remarrying.
“I don’t think I’d get married again because I have different ideas about the institution of marriage and where it comes from and what it’s about,” he said at the time. “I’m not against it but I just don’t think I would do it again.”
James also discussed his feelings about having children during that interview.
“I’ve learned a lot about myself and how I feel about children. It’s something that I’ve always kind of known that I didn’t want to have children, but it wasn’t something that has been as concrete as it is now,” he explained.
The actor continues his role on The Young and the Restless, which airs weekdays on CBS.
