PEOPLE confirmed that Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have separated after 19 years of marriage.
The Oscar-winning actress filed for divorce on Sept. 30, one day after news of their split became public. Sources told PEOPLE that the couple’s “lives were moving in different directions.”
TMZ was first to report the separation, claiming they’d been living apart since early summer.
Kidman Fought to Save the Marriage
The Big Little Lies star didn’t want the relationship to end, according to sources close to the situation.
“She didn’t want this. She has been fighting to save the marriage.”
Kidman and Urban celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary just three months before the split became public. The actress marked the June 25 milestone with an Instagram post showing them together.
“Happy Anniversary Baby @KeithUrban,” she wrote.
Urban didn’t post about their anniversary on social media. However, he’d shared photos with Kidman in May after winning the Triple Crown Award at the ACM Awards.
Living Separate Lives
The country singer moved out of their shared Nashville home and got his own place while continuing his High and Alive World Tour.
Kidman stayed in their Tennessee home with their two daughters, Sunday Rose (16) and Faith Margaret (14), when she wasn’t filming Practical Magic 2 in the United Kingdom.
“While Keith has been away on tour all summer, Nicole and her daughters have been inseparable, spending time together bonding,”
a source told PEOPLE in August.
The actress posted “summer memories” photos on Instagram showing time spent with her daughters and family members.
Split Felt Inevitable to Friends
People in the couple’s inner circle weren’t surprised by the separation once Urban established his own residence.
“Their lives were moving in different directions, and once he quietly set up his own place, it felt like the writing was on the wall.”
Another source explained that the split had been expected among those close to the couple.
“It really hasn’t been a secret in their circles that Keith and Nicole have been living separately for a while now. People close to Keith felt like the split was kind of inevitable.”
Family Support During Difficult Time
Kidman has been leaning heavily on her family, particularly her younger sister Antonia Kidman, for support during the separation.
“Nicole’s sister has been a rock, and the entire Kidman family has come together to support one another,”
a source shared.
The actress has built a strong community in Nashville, where she’s focused on raising her daughters.
“Nicole lives full-time in Nashville. She loves the tight-knit community and group of friends that she has built, and it’s the perfect place to raise her children.”
Kidman and Urban met in 2005 and married on June 25, 2006, in Sydney. Both originally from Australia, they welcomed Sunday Rose in July 2008 and Faith Margaret in December 2010.
Kidman was previously married to Tom Cruise from 1990 to 2001. They share two children: Isabella Jane (32) and Connor (29).
Neither Kidman nor Urban has made public statements about their separation. The divorce filing came one day after PEOPLE confirmed their split to the public.
