Chance the Rapper Reveals Toughest Part of Divorce

Chance the Rapper opened up about his divorce from Kirsten Corley during an appearance on the New Rory & Mal podcast Thursday.

The 32-year-old rapper said he and Corley are adjusting to their new relationship after splitting last year. They’re “still family forever,” he explained.

“The reality of it is everybody deals with their family different. The family I come from is very, very close. It’s very important for us and for her and her family for us to be tight. So we still travel together, we[‘re] still family forever. It’s just a different format of it.”

Corley filed for divorce in December, eight months after the couple announced their separation. They’d been married for five years.

The couple first met when they were 9 years old. They married in 2019 and have two daughters together: Kensli, 9, and Marli, 5.

Chance admitted the divorce process hasn’t been easy. He’s still getting used to how things work now.

“I ain’t gonna act like it’s not tough. I ain’t gonna act like it’s perfect and we shook hands and dipped. It’s weird. I think the toughness is that it’s a reality. I think that’s the toughest part. You might feel like you’re over it and you’re not over it.”

He said they have to give themselves grace while adjusting to their new normal.

Both he and Corley live in Chicago. They see each other regularly and work to keep things respectful.

“We try and always remember the importance of supporting each other, loving each other. Not just for the sake of our kids, but for the sake of each other’s sanity. For the fact that we have respect for each other… We all still go to the same places. I see her at least every other week.”

The Grammy-winning artist said their children will keep them connected for life. That reality helps them both stay grounded.

“It’s the rest of your life you will be connected, no matter what, emotionally, to this being. Y’all in a venn diagram. Y’all both connected to the same thing… I’m not saying we the most emotionally mature people, but we both, I think, at least have that vantage point that allows us to never go too far in any direction.”

He’s grateful Corley approaches their relationship the same way.
