Brittany Snow said she never wanted to be part of reality TV during her marriage to ex-husband Tyler Stanaland.
The actress opened up about how reality television affected her relationship in SELF magazine’s November cover story, published Thursday.
“I think people forget that when I got married, I got married to a real estate agent. He wasn’t even in my business whatsoever. He was definitely not a reality star.”
Stanaland joined the original cast of Selling the OC when it premiered in August 2022.
The couple married in March 2020. They announced their separation in September 2022, just one month after the Netflix show launched. Snow filed for divorce four months later.
“It felt like it was a running snowball that I couldn’t catch. I didn’t know what the heck was going on because it was so public and I couldn’t control it.”
Snow added she knows “the truth” and “that’s all that matters.”
Reality show fans speculated about infidelity after the couple’s separation announcement. Snow cited “irreconcilable differences” in her divorce filing.
Stanaland denied cheating allegations. However, PEOPLE reported that a Selling the OC costar attempted to kiss him off-camera the same day the couple announced their separation.
A source told the publication that Stanaland’s participation on the show and their lives becoming a storyline “broke them.”
“They had issues before, but this is the final straw.”
Snow addressed the divorce on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast.
“I will say what people think happened, happened.”
The 39-year-old actress described the divorce as so painful it affected her appetite. She told SELF she began talking to herself “like someone I loved” to help herself heal.
“I’d be like, ‘Okay, baby girl, do you want a bagel? Let’s get you a bagel. We’re going to toast it. We’re going to put some cream cheese on it. Is that all you can eat? Okay, that’s okay.'”
Snow said she’s continued this practice of self-compassion since the divorce.
