Dr. Howard Krein has hired a high-profile divorce attorney after his wife, Ashley Biden, filed for divorce in Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas on Aug. 11.
Attorney Cheryl L. Young notified the court Wednesday morning that she’ll represent Krein in the divorce proceedings, according to online records. She also filed a counterclaim to Biden’s filing on Krein’s behalf.
Young specializes in representing “high net-worth professionals.” She notably represented reality TV star Kate Gosselin during her headline-making 2009 divorce from Jon Gosselin.
Krein, 58, began dating Biden, 44, in 2010 when her father Joe Biden served as vice president.
The couple married in 2012. Over the next 13 years, Krein appeared occasionally with the Biden family as his father-in-law ran for president and served in the White House.
Krein works as an ear, nose and throat surgeon who specializes in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. He’s also a professor at Thomas Jefferson University and has served as chief medical officer of health tech firm StartUp Health.
Biden is a social worker and fashion designer who made frequent public appearances during her father’s presidency.
Neither Krein nor Biden have publicly commented on the divorce filing or revealed why they decided to split.
Young’s High-Profile Track Record
In 2009, the Gosselin family dominated headlines as Jon and Kate navigated a messy split. The couple starred in a reality TV series about raising their twins and sextuplets in southeastern Pennsylvania.
Their separation was announced in an episode of the show.
The Gosselins’ divorce played out publicly as Jon and Kate initially used a “nesting” custody arrangement. The couple took turns staying at the family home so their kids wouldn’t have to change their routines.
The divorce was finalized within the year. Kate – represented by Young and attorney Mark Momjian – kept the family home, won primary custody of all eight children, and continued her TV career.
The show rebranded to Kate Plus 8 and focused on her life as a divorced mother.
