Joshua Leonard announced his divorce from Alison Pill after 10 years of marriage, revealing the news in an Instagram post on August 15.
The Blair Witch Project actor, 50, confirmed that he and the actress, 39, “were officially divorced a few weeks ago” following what he described as “a few years of separation and practice.”
Leonard shared a throwback photo with Pill and their 8-year-old daughter Wilder alongside his announcement.
“For the sake of alacritous disclosure, and to pave a future for more aligned & transparent matters … @msalisonpill and I were officially divorced a few weeks ago – after a few years of separation and practice,” Leonard wrote.
The actor acknowledged the reality of their situation simply. “Yes, life happened to us. That’s nothing to gloat about.”
Despite the end of their marriage, Leonard emphasized their continued partnership as parents.
“And YET, we’re A+ co-parents, and Alison remains one of few truly brilliant humans I’ve ever encountered,” he added.
Leonard described their path forward as unconventional but evolving. “And while the best path forward may not be storybook-rote (or even ready!)… it reveals itself in stanzas – a disorienting novelty – such are the fears and wins of life.”
The Couple’s History
Leonard and Pill got engaged in January 2015 during a group hiking trip to California’s Joshua Tree National Park. The Bates Motel star told PEOPLE about the proposal at the time.
“I told her that I loved her more than anybody on the planet,” Leonard said of the Trap actress. “It was pretty good. Her hands were shaking, and so about 30 seconds after I gave it to her I said, ‘You might want to put that on now.'”
The couple married four months later in Los Angeles in May 2015.
“We’re married!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” the Canadian actress announced on Instagram, sharing a photo.
Their daughter Wilder Grace Leonard was born in November 2016. Pill celebrated the arrival with a family photo on social media.
“So much to be thankful for,” Pill captioned the post. “Wilder Grace Leonard, born November 19, 2016. ‘Oh, earth, you’re too wonderful for anybody to realize you. … Do human beings ever realize life while they live it? – Every, every minute?'”
The former couple share custody of Wilder, who is now 8 years old.
