Alex Rodriguez and his ex-wife Cynthia Scurtis opened up about their marriage’s end in HBO’s docuseries Alex vs ARod.
The former baseball star and Scurtis reflected on Rodriguez’s past infidelity. This included his rumored affair with Madonna in 2008.
Rodriguez’s first cheating accusation happened in 2007. He was caught with a mystery woman in Toronto.
“He seemed to be extremely apologetic and not proud of his actions,” Scurtis said about the Toronto incident.
The couple had welcomed their first daughter, Natasha, in November 2004, shortly before the Toronto incident occurred.
But after their second daughter Ella arrived in April 2008, Scurtis said “a very similar scenario” happened. The docuseries showed a New York Post headline suggesting Rodriguez and Madonna were more than friends. Madonna was married to Guy Ritchie at the time.
“At that point, we got divorced,” Scurtis revealed.
The Divorce Filing
Scurtis filed for divorce in 2008. Court papers alleged Rodriguez had “emotionally abandoned” her and their children. She claimed he had multiple affairs.
Her lawyer said Rodriguez had an “affair of the heart” with Madonna. This was the “last straw.”
Rodriguez maintained he and the singer were just friends when speaking to PEOPLE at the time.
“I’ve been to two [of her] concerts, yet I’ve read that I went to 20. I’ve also read that we were buying an apartment together. That is absolutely ridiculous and not true.”
“You have to have a sense of humor when it comes to this stuff,” Rodriguez added.
A Madonna representative told PEOPLE at the time that the singer and Rodriguez had the same manager, Guy Oseary. They had met and Madonna took her kids to a Yankees game. The representative said there wasn’t anything else to comment on.
Looking Back
On the HBO docuseries, Scurtis said she knew Rodriguez “had his own demons.” She was “hoping he would get help…and that it could end differently than it did.”
Scurtis described Rodriguez as “really upset” about their divorce. His reaction affected her, “but at the same time, I think I felt a sense of freedom.”
Rodriguez addressed the alleged affairs in hindsight. He said he “could have been more loyal” and a better husband to Scurtis.
“I could have been more present. I could have been more sympathetic, empathetic, all of it. You name it.”
Rodriguez is currently dating Jaclyn Cordeiro. They were first linked in October 2022 and made their relationship Instagram official two months later.
